Sudipto Das (Palau, Financial Intelligence Unit, FIU)
Sudipto worked on the systems that analyze suspicious or illegal financial activity for the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), a government organization that detects, disrupts and deters money laundering and terrorist financing activity in Palau’s banking system.
The Financial Intelligence Unit’s (FIU’s) process for collecting bank transactions and conducting risk analysis required the Senior Intelligence Analyst to manually review transactions in order to assign a risk level to each transaction set. The CMU student enhanced the existing system with a rule-based ‘expert’ model, based on the Senior Analyst’s manual logic, to automatically apply a risk level Low, Medium or High. The result is reduced manual effort associated with risk analysis providing more time for further investigation on higher risk transactions.
